Much is written about Crescent Head’s amazing breaks and surf culture, but there’s more to the area than its rolling sets.
A fishing mecca
For starters, the region is an angler’s paradise, with a choice of rock, beach, creek and river fishing. Flathead, bream, whiting and jewfish are all on offer. Local boat ramps at Killick Creek or Point Plomer accommodate smaller boats looking to head offshore, and if you feel like heading inland for some freshwater fishing, Maria and Macleay Rivers are a bass fisher’s heaven. South West Rocks to the north is another area providing a plethora of fishing spots.
Nature-lovers rejoice
And for those who love to explore, the area is spoilt with national park walks, beaches and jaw-dropping views. Local walks to Little Knobby or Back Beach will keep you active, or venture south to Limeburners Creek Nature Reserve and enjoy the 1.8km Big Hill Rainforest track. To the north of Crescent lies Hat Head and Arakoon National Parks, featuring walks for the more intrepid, and incredible views from Smoky Cape Lighthouse.
The quaint and the curious
Enjoy a counter meal and a cold one overlooking the river or beer garden at The Heritage Hotel of Gladstone, then explore the charms of this heritage village. Explore the Trial Bay Gaol at South West Rocks, and witness first-hand the trying conditions its inmates endured.
The everyday things
Beyond the fun stuff, Crescent has everything you need. Port Macquarie’s airport and regional hospital is 45 minutes away, and Kempsey is a large local town with everything you could need – from discount department stores and supermarkets to banking, hardware and health care.
Charles Sturt, University of Newcastle and a range of quality schools provide education options for all ages.
